Admire the art of topiary

Jardins de Marqueyssac are renowned for their exceptional topiary art. For more than 150 years, generations of gardeners have carefully sculpted over 150,000 century old boxwoods, creating a breathtaking vegetal labyrinth. Winding pathways invite visitors on a peaceful and romantic stroll through astonishing plant creations.

The gardens are especially known for their flowing “wave” shapes that follow the curves of the landscape, alongside perfectly symmetrical cones adding elegance and refinement. These living masterpieces reflect the extraordinary skill and creativity of the gardeners who have shaped this unique site over time.

Step into history

The Marqueyssac estate is deeply rooted in history. The château, built in the 17th century, reflects the architectural heritage of the Périgord with its elegant façades, stone roofs and panoramic terraces.

The gardens themselves date back to the early 19th century, when Julien de Cerval, inspired by the Italian Renaissance gardens, transformed the estate into a poetic landscape. Listed as part of France’s national heritage, the château and gardens transport visitors into a timeless world.

Among the many surprises of the site, discover the skeleton of an Allosaurus named Kan, a giant predator from 158 million years ago, discovered in Arizona and considered one of the most complete specimens in the world.
