She welcomed her twelve adopted children there, from different backgrounds, creating a “Rainbow Tribe” that symbolised her commitment to universal brotherhood.

Discover the chapel of the Château des Milandes
The chapel of the Château des Milandes, dating from the early 16th century, is a place rich in history, where art, faith, and significant events intertwine. Designed by François de Caumont, it reflects the importance of private worship for noble families, with a flamboyant Gothic style enriched by Renaissance elements. After the Revolution, it was transformed into an agricultural building, concealing its artistic treasures. In the 19th century, local restoration work helped protect the chapel, but it was not until the early 20th century that further restoration revealed its historical potential. Joséphine Baker, owner of the château in the mid-20th century, added a touch of glamour, notably by marrying in the chapel in 1947. After years of abandonment, it was reintegrated into the estate in 2016, leading to meticulous restoration work. Recent discoveries, such as wall paintings and a crypt, have enriched the chapel’s story, and it has now reopened to the public, offering each visitor a unique experience.

Yes, picnic tables are available in one section of the garden. This is the only area of the estate where picnicking is permitted.
- Are the gardens accessible with pushchairs?
The interiors of the château and chapel are not accessible with pushchairs (a baby carrier is recommended). Pushchairs may be left under the stone arcades outside the château shop next to the château entrance (the same applies for the chapel).
- Can tickets be purchased for the gardens only?
The ticket provides access to both the château and the gardens.
